Total Access were invited by SGP Contracts to develop a comprehensive façade and louvre access stratergy on their new ‘M by Montecalm Hotel’, in Shoreditch, London. The final solution involved both Fall Arrest and Abseil Access.
In addition to the original brief we were asked to assist with the installation of the decorative louvres for the building exterior. The louvres would be craned into position and safely secured into final position by skilled Total Access IRATA qualified tradesmen. The team were also required to carry out weather proofing to the curtain wall glazing.
Total Access Solution
Following a detailed consultation and design phase, the use of BMU’s (Building Maintenance Unit) was dismissed due to the complex building geometry and the volume of lost space to accommodate such a machine. Total Access were employed to work alongside the main architect and façade contractors to design and install a bespoke abseil and fall arrest system which could not only accommodate the striking geometry of their new build hotel, but would also ensure a safe, aesthetically conscious and cost effective solution.
A series of unobtrusive EN795 Rope Access anchor points were installed to structural steelwork accessible by bespoke steel walkways to each of the 5 inclined elevations of the building nestled within the decorative louvres. Access to each of the elevations is gained via the use of “BridgeLatch” Fall Arrest systems, specifically chosen for its capability to work on an incline of 0 - 70°.
Total Access’ solution for the installation of the louvres was to use rope access. Because of the height, access and steep angles of the roof rope access was the best method to use for the install, and the most cost effective.
Benefits of Our Solution
Complete façade and lower access with minimal impact on space and aesthetics of a highly complex building.
“SGP Contracts Ltd. employed the services of Total Access to design and install an abseiling system on the prestigious 'M by Montcalm' hotel project in Shoreditch, London. Aside the main contract, Total Access also assisted with the installation of the slopping roof top facade works. This involved silicon works to the joints of the unitized roof panels, installation of capping brackets and roof louvres of various sizes and shapes. All these works were carried out by abseiling techniques due to the steep angles of the roof.
The Total Access personnel undertaking these works on site conducted themselves in a very professional manner. Their dedication and attention was very commendable and the works were completed to a very high standard. It was a pleasure to work with Total Access on this project.
