Confined Space Entry Controller Training
Take control of confined space operations from outside the space, managing entry and exit, monitoring personnel and equipment, and coordinating emergency response when conditions change. You'll learn how to implement pre-entry procedures, maintain communication with team members inside, interpret atmospheric monitoring readings and hand over effectively to rescue teams in an emergency.
• Legislation and regulations
Legal framework governing confined space work, including the Confined Spaces Regulations 1997, the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and the accompanying Approved Code of Practice (ACoP L101).
• Duties under the Regulations
What the Regulations require of entry controllers specifically, including the obligation to avoid entry where reasonably practicable and the responsibilities that apply when entry cannot be avoided.
• Risk assessment and hazard identification
How to identify hazards associated with a confined space before entry begins, assess the level of risk and select appropriate control measures, including atmospheric testing and isolation procedures.
• Duties under the Regulations
What the Regulations require of employers and employees, including the primary duty to avoid entry where reasonably practicable and the steps required when entry cannot be avoided.
• Atmospheric hazards and gas monitoring
How hazardous atmospheres develop, what the key gases and vapours are, and how to monitor, interpret and act on atmospheric readings from outside the space.
• Safe systems of work and permits to work
How to implement and oversee a safe system of work, issue and manage permits to work, and apply point-of-work assessments to respond to changing conditions.
• Roles and responsibilities
The specific duties of the entry controller, including pre-entry checks, maintaining oversight of the work team and knowing when to act. Includes the relationship between the entry controller, entrants and the rescue team.
• Communication
How to maintain continuous, reliable communication with personnel inside the confined space and what to do when communication is lost or conditions deteriorate.
• Equipment inspection and use
How to inspect, test and oversee the use of confined space equipment, including gas detectors, harnesses, tripods and winches, before and during the operation.
• Respiratory protective equipment
How to inspect and apply respiratory protective equipment, including escape breathing apparatus, and understand when its use is required.
• Emergency arrangements
How to recognise when an emergency is developing, raise the alarm, initiate emergency procedures and hand over control to a rescue team - without entering the space.
• Assessment
Observed practical exercises covering pre-entry procedures, personnel monitoring, communication and emergency handover, evaluated by the course instructor.

Entry controllers, site supervisors and managers responsible for overseeing confined space operations, controlling access and ensuring safe systems of work are followed - without entering the space themselves.
