• Legislation and regulations
The legal framework governing confined space work, including the Confined Spaces Regulations 1997, the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and the requirements of ACoP L101, and what each requires of those supervising or managing entries.

• Confined space identification
How to identify whether a space meets the legal definition of a confined space, classify it by risk level and determine the specified risks present or reasonably foreseeable.

• Risk assessment
How to plan, carry out and review a risk assessment for a confined space entry, identify appropriate control measures and ensure findings are communicated to everyone involved before work begins.

• Safe systems of work and permits to work
How to develop, implement and oversee a safe system of work, when a permit to work is required and how it is issued, managed and cancelled including the responsibilities of the authorised person throughout.

• Competent persons
How to identify and verify the competency of personnel involved in confined space operations, and what supervisors and managers are responsible for ensuring in terms of training and qualification.

• Medical fitness
The medical fitness requirements for confined space workers, how often assessments must be renewed and the supervisor's responsibility for ensuring personnel are fit before entry is authorised.

• Equipment, PPE and RPE
How to select, inspect and oversee the correct use of confined space equipment, personal protective equipment and respiratory protective equipment, including when specific RPE is required and how to verify it is being used correctly.

• Access, egress and isolations
How to manage safe access and egress arrangements and implement lockout/tagout (LOTO) isolation procedures for electrical, mechanical and process hazards before entry begins.

• Contamination and atmospheric monitoring
How to assess contamination risks, specify appropriate atmospheric testing requirements and oversee continuous monitoring throughout the operation, including responding to changes in readings.

• Electrical equipment
The specific precautions required when electrical equipment is used in or near a confined space, including equipment selection and isolation requirements.

• Communication
How to establish and maintain reliable communication between entrants, the entry controller and supervisors, and what procedures apply when communication is lost or conditions change.

• Emergency arrangements
How to plan, coordinate and oversee emergency arrangements for a confined space operation, including rescue provision, alarm procedures and handover to emergency services.

• Assessment
Risk assessment exercises and reviewed examples of confined space procedures, evaluated by the course instructor through scenario-based discussion and written work.

Classroom-based course covering real-world scenarios, risk assessment exercises and reviewed examples of confined space procedures. The focus throughout is on applying safe systems of work, managing permits and coordinating emergency arrangements from a supervisory and management perspective.

Authorised persons, supervisors or managers responsible for personnel working in confined spaces. This course equips attendees to plan, supervise and coordinate confined space work safely and ensure teams have appropriate training and resources.

Delegates should have experience working in confined spaces prior to attending.
