CPCS A61 Appointed Person Training
Effective lift planning is essential to ensure lifting operations are carried out safely, efficiently and in accordance with legal requirements. The CPCS A61 Appointed Person course provides delegates with the knowledge and practical skills required to plan, coordinate and manage lifting operations. Designed for those with responsibility for lifting activities, the course develops an understanding of crane capabilities, risk management, lift planning and statutory requirements, enabling delegates to carry out the duties of an Appointed Person in accordance with industry best practice.
• Introduction to the Role of the Appointed Person
Understanding the responsibilities of the Appointed Person and their role in ensuring lifting operations are properly planned, supervised and carried out safely.
• Health and Safety Legislation
Reviewing the legislation, regulations and approved codes of practice relevant to lifting operations, including the responsibilities of those involved in planning and managing lifts.
• Roles and Responsibilities in Lifting Operations
Understanding the duties of the Appointed Person, Crane Supervisor, Crane Operator and Slinger/Signaller, and how these roles work together to ensure safe lifting activities.
• Lift Planning and Safe Systems of Work
Learning how to develop lift plans, produce method statements and implement safe systems of work for a variety of lifting operations.
• Risk Assessment and Hazard Management
Identifying potential hazards associated with lifting operations and implementing suitable control measures to reduce risk and maintain safety.
• Types of Cranes and Lifting Equipment
Understanding the capabilities, limitations and applications of different types of cranes and lifting equipment used within construction and industrial environments.
• Crane Stability and Ground Conditions
Learning how ground conditions, loadings, outrigger pressures and environmental factors can affect crane stability and lifting safety.
• Lifting Accessories and Load Calculations
Understanding the selection and use of slings, chains, shackles and lifting beams, along with calculating lifting weights, sling angles and equipment capacities.
• Duty Charts and Lift Planning Documentation
Learning how to interpret crane duty charts, range diagrams and lifting documentation to ensure lifting activities are planned correctly and safely.
• Communication and Coordination
Understanding the importance of effective communication between all personnel involved in lifting operations and the procedures required to coordinate activities safely.
• Practical Lift Planning Exercises
Applying knowledge to realistic lifting scenarios, including the preparation of lift plans, risk assessments and supporting documentation.
• Theory and Practical Testing
Delegates complete the CPCS Theory Test and Practical Technical Test to demonstrate their knowledge and ability to fulfil the responsibilities of an Appointed Person.

This course is designed for site managers, project managers, lifting managers, supervisors and other personnel responsible for planning and managing lifting operations. It is suitable for individuals undertaking the role of Appointed Person and those requiring the CPCS A61 qualification.
There are no formal prerequisites for this course. Delegates should have a good understanding of spoken and written English to successfully complete the theory and practical assessments.
