Full Face Respirator User Training
A full-face respirator only protects the wearer if it is correctly fitted, properly maintained and used with the right filter for the hazard; understanding why each of these factors matters is as important as knowing the procedure itself. This two-hour course covers the working principles of full-face mask respirators, filter selection and replacement, correct fitting and pre-use checks, and cleaning and storage procedures in line with HSG53 and the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations. On successful completion, delegates receive a certificate of competency.
• Purpose of respiratory protective equipment
Why RPE is required, where it sits within the hierarchy of controls and the circumstances in which a full-face mask respirator is the appropriate solution for protecting against airborne hazards.
• Hazards and risks of exposure
The airborne hazards that full-face mask respirators are designed to protect against, the health effects of exposure to gases, vapours, dusts and particulates, and how risk level determines filter selection.
• Working principles of full-face mask respirators
How a full-face mask respirator works, the difference between filtering and supplied-air systems, and what the full-face mask provides in terms of protection compared to half-face and disposable alternatives.
• Filter types and replacement
The different filter types available, what each protects against, how to identify the correct filter for a given hazard and when filters must be replaced — including the signs of filter saturation and the role of pre-use checks in identifying a compromised filter.
• Correct fitting and pre-use checks
How to don and fit a full-face mask respirator correctly and carry out pre-use checks, including positive and negative pressure seal checks, in line with manufacturer requirements and HSG53 guidance.
• Cleaning, aftercare and storage
How to clean, inspect and store full-face mask respirators correctly after use, including monthly inspection requirements in line with COSHH Regulations and the steps required to keep equipment in a safe and serviceable condition.
• Employee responsibilities
The responsibilities of employees in relation to RPE use, maintenance and reporting, including when equipment must be taken out of service and referred for inspection or replacement.
• Assessment
Practical assessment and written test completed at the end of the course.
Course combining classroom instruction with a practical assessment and written test. Covers pre-use and monthly inspection procedures in line with HSG53 and COSHH Regulations.
Staff involved in the selection, wearing, maintenance or storage of full face mask respirators.
Delegates must be clean shaven around the facial area at the time of training. Face fit testing is not included in this course and must be carried out separately to ensure an adequate fit for each individual.
