Half Face Respirator User Training
Learn to select, fit, maintain and store half-face mask respirators safely. You will understand why respiratory protection is needed, carry out pre-use and monthly inspections, and ensure compliance with COSHH regulations. Successful completion demonstrates competence in using and maintaining respiratory protective equipment correctly.
• Purpose of respiratory protective equipment (RPE)
Why RPE is required, where it sits within the hierarchy of controls and when a half-face respirator is the appropriate control for airborne hazards.
• Hazards and risks of exposure
The airborne hazards half-face respirators are designed to protect against, the health effects of exposure to gases, vapours, dusts and particulates, and how exposure risk influences control measures.
• Working principles of half-face respirators
How half-face respirators provide protection, including the difference between filtering and supplied-air systems and the level of protection they provide compared to other RPE types.
• Filter types and replacement
The different filter types available, what each protects against, how to select the correct filter for a task and when filters must be replaced, including signs of saturation.
• Correct fitting and pre-use checks
How to correctly don and fit a half-face respirator and carry out pre-use checks, including seal checks, in line with manufacturer instructions and HSG53 guidance.
• Cleaning, aftercare and storage
How to clean, inspect and store half-face respirators correctly after use, including ongoing inspection requirements under COSHH and actions required to maintain equipment integrity.
• Employee responsibilities
The responsibilities of users in relation to correct use, maintenance and reporting of defects, including when equipment must be removed from service.
• Assessment
Practical assessment and written test completed at the end of the course.
How to prepare:
• Participants must be clean shaven around the facial area at the time of training
Classroom-based theory combined with practical demonstrations and supervised exercises covering fitting, inspection and maintenance of half-face respirators in line with HSG53 and COSHH requirements.
Staff involved in the selection, wearing, maintenance or storage of half face mask respirators.
