Powered Respirator User Training
Select, fit, use and maintain powered respirators safely and in line with your legal responsibilities. You'll carry out pre-use checks, apply correct maintenance procedures, and meet your duties under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH) and the Health and Safety Executive's guidance on respiratory protective equipment at work (HSG53).
• Purpose of respiratory protective equipment (RPE)
Why RPE is required, where it sits within the hierarchy of control and when powered respirators are the appropriate solution for managing airborne hazards.
• Hazards and risks of exposure
The airborne hazards powered respirators are designed to protect against, the health effects of exposure to gases, vapours, dusts and particulates, and how exposure risk influences control measures.
• Working principles of powered respirators
How powered respirators operate, including airflow delivery, filtration mechanisms and the level of protection provided compared to non-powered systems.
• Filter types and replacement
The different filter types available, what each protects against, how to select the correct filter for a task and when filters must be replaced, including signs of saturation and reduced performance.
• Correct fitting and pre-use checks
How to correctly don and check powered respirators before use, including pre-use checks in line with manufacturer instructions and HSG53 guidance.
• Cleaning, aftercare and storage
How to clean, inspect and store powered respirators correctly after use, including ongoing inspection requirements under COSHH and actions required to maintain equipment integrity.
• Responsibilities of employees
The responsibilities of users in relation to correct use, maintenance and reporting of defects, including when equipment must be removed from service.
• Assessment
Practical assessment and written test completed at the end of the course.
How to prepare:
• Participants must be clean shaven around the facial area at the time of training
Classroom-based theory combined with practical demonstrations and supervised exercises covering fitting, inspection and maintenance of powered respirators in line with HSG53 and COSHH requirements.
Staff responsible for the selection, use, maintenance and storage of powered respirators.
