Capstan Winch User Working at Height Training
A capstan winch extends the lifting and lowering capability of a climbing team, but incorrect installation, poor rope management or misjudged technique can cause rope damage, load failure or injury to personnel above and below. This course gives delegates the practical knowledge and skills to install, operate and maintain a capstan winch safely. On successful completion, delegates receive a certificate of competency.
• Pre-use inspection
How to carry out pre-use checks on PPE, the winch and ropes before each use, identifying defects or wear that would take any component out of service before the operation begins.
• Climbing assessment
A practical assessment of the delegate's climbing competency to confirm they are able to work safely at height as part of the capstan winch operation.
• Basic knots
The knots required for capstan winch operations, including when and how each is used correctly and how to verify that a knot is correctly tied before loading.
• Winch installation
How to install a capstan winch correctly on site, including positioning, securing and checking that the installation is stable and within the load limits of the anchor point before use.
• Rope installation
How to install rope onto the capstan winch correctly, including correct winding technique, the precautions required to prevent tangling and how to check that the rope is correctly loaded before beginning operations.
• Lifting and lowering techniques
How to carry out controlled lifting and lowering operations using the capstan winch, including load management, communication between team members and the precautions required to protect personnel in the load zone.
• Rope deviation management
How to manage rope deviation during capstan winch operations, including identifying when a deviation is required and how to rig it correctly to prevent rope damage and maintain controlled load movement.
• Passing knots
How to pass a knot through the system safely during a lifting or lowering operation, including the sequencing required to maintain control of the load throughout.
• Tag line usage
How to use a tag line correctly to control load movement and prevent rotation or swing during lifting and lowering operations.
• Assessment
Observed practical exercises evaluated by the course instructor.
Course combining brief classroom instruction with practical exercises covering winch installation, rope management and lifting and lowering techniques under instructor supervision.
Personnel who operate capstan winches on site, including supervisors and operatives in construction, maintenance or rescue operations.
Delegates must have completed the Basic Rigging of Light Lifting Equipment course or equivalent. Delegates must hold a valid tower climbing working at height qualification. Delegates must provide proof of both certifications prior to attendance.
