CITB Rooftop Safety Training
Falls from rooftops remain one of the most common causes of fatal workplace accidents in construction, and the range of hazards involved, from fragile surfaces and unprotected edges to weather and restricted access, demands a structured approach to safe access. This CITB-accredited course gives operatives and supervisors the knowledge and practical skills to access a variety of rooftops safely. On successful completion, delegates receive a CITB Rooftop Safety and Access certificate.
• Legislation and risk assessment
The legal framework for rooftop work, including the Work at Height Regulations 2005, and how to produce and review risk assessments and method statements for rooftop access tasks.
• Weather and roof coverings
How weather conditions affect the safety of rooftop access, and how different types of roof covering — including fragile materials — influence the route, equipment and precautions required.
• Rooftop safe systems of work
How to develop and implement safe systems of work for rooftop access, including the identification of fragility zones and exclusion areas, common causes of rooftop accidents and how each can be prevented.
• Means of access
How to select the safest and most appropriate route and access method for a given rooftop, including the considerations that determine whether a particular means of access is suitable for the task.
• Edge protection and exclusion areas
The types of edge protection available for rooftop work, how to select and position them correctly, and how fragility and exclusion areas are identified and managed during access and work.
• Fall arrest, fall restraint and work positioning systems
How to select, inspect and use fall arrest systems, fall restraint systems and work positioning equipment correctly on rooftops, including tie-off points, anchor points and temporary lifelines.
• Harness and equipment checks
How to check and correctly fit harnesses and associated fall protection equipment before each access, including identifying defects that would take equipment out of service.
• Emergency, rescue and recovery
How to plan for emergencies on rooftop sites, determine rescue provision requirements and ensure that an effective rescue plan is in place before access begins.
• Assessment
Theory test and observed practical assessment evaluated by the course instructor.
Course combining classroom theory with practical exercises covering fall protection equipment selection, fitting and use, and rooftop access methods.
Operatives and supervisors required to work on rooftops or at height in the building and construction sector.
