COSHH Awareness Training
Understanding COSHH is one thing, applying it correctly in a specific workplace environment is another. This course explores the legal duties placed on employers and employees under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002, covering hazard recognition, risk assessment, exposure limits, control measures and health surveillance requirements. On successful completion, delegates receive a certificate of competency.
• Definition of substances hazardous to health
How substances hazardous to health are defined under the COSHH Regulations 2002, the range of materials that fall within scope and how they are classified and labelled.
• How hazardous substances harm health
The routes by which hazardous substances enter the body, the short- and long-term health effects of exposure and the factors that determine the severity of harm.
• Assessing the risks
How to carry out a COSHH risk assessment for substances used or stored on site, identify who may be harmed and determine the level of risk before selecting appropriate control measures.
• Controlling exposure
How to apply the hierarchy of controls to reduce exposure to hazardous substances, including substitution, engineering controls, safe systems of work and personal protective equipment.
• Workplace exposure limits
How workplace exposure limits (WELs) are set, what they mean in practice and the employer's duty to ensure exposure is reduced to as low as reasonably practicable and below the WEL where one applies.
• Precautions and health surveillance
The precautionary measures required to protect workers from hazardous substances, and when health surveillance is required, what it involves and what the employer must do with the results.
• Assessment
Knowledge checks completed at the end of the course.
Classroom-based course combining theory with practical risk assessment exercises, tailored where possible to the substances and processes relevant to delegates' own working environments.
Staff who may be exposed to hazardous substances and supervisors or managers responsible for controlling their use in the workplace.
Delegates must provide a list of COSHH substances stored or used on site.
