
Harness and Lanyard User Training
This course familiarises delegates with the correct fitting and use of harnesses and associated fall protection equipment, covering pre-use inspection, safe use demonstrations, basic climbing techniques and site-specific access methods in line with the Work at Height Regulations 2005. On successful completion, delegates receive a certificate of competency valid for three years.
• Legislation and regulations
The legal framework for working at height, including the Work at Height Regulations 2005 and the duties they place on employers and employees when using harness-based fall protection equipment.
• Pre-use checks and fitting
How to carry out pre-use checks and correctly fit a harness, helmet and site-specific fall protection equipment, including identifying signs of wear or damage that would take equipment out of service.
• Demonstrations of safe use
Instructor-led demonstrations of the correct use of harnesses and associated fall protection equipment, providing a reference point before delegates progress to supervised practical exercises.
• Basic climbing techniques
How to move safely at height using harness-based fall protection, including maintaining connection at all times and the precautions required when ascending, descending and transferring between anchor points.
• Site-specific access methods
How to apply harness and fall protection knowledge to the specific access methods and equipment used at the delegate's site, ensuring the training is directly relevant to their working environment.
• Assessment
Theory test and observed practical assessment evaluated by the course instructor.
Course combining classroom-based theory with practical exercises and assessed activities. Delivers both theory and practical assessments in a single session.
Personnel required to wear and use harnesses and lanyards for work at height tasks, including access via ladders or platforms.
Delegates should be physically capable of using PPE and performing basic climbing techniques.
