High Bay Rack Access Training
Accessing crane systems and high bay racking in a warehouse involves working on structures not designed as access routes and transferring safely between them requires skills that generic working at height training does not cover. This course gives delegates the practical skills to use fall protection equipment safely in warehouse environments, from harness inspection and climbing techniques through to safe transfers between crane systems and pallet racking. On successful completion, delegates receive a certificate of competency.
• Legislation and regulations
The legal framework for working at height on warehouse structures, including the Work at Height Regulations 2005 and the duties they place on employers and employees when planning and carrying out access to crane systems and high bay racking.
• PPE inspection and fitting
How to carry out pre-use checks and correctly fit harnesses, helmets, fall arrest lanyards and positioning lanyards in line with manufacturer requirements before each access.
• Demonstrations of equipment use
Instructor-led demonstrations of the correct use of fall protection equipment and access systems specific to the crane and racking structures present in the training environment, providing a reference point before practical exercises begin.
• Climbing techniques
How to climb safely on crane systems and high bay racking structures, including correct body position, equipment management and the precautions required when moving vertically on structures not designed as permanent access routes.
• Access methods
How to use fixed systems, fall arrest blocks and lanyards correctly for access to and egress from crane systems and racking, including when each method is appropriate and how to maintain continuous protection throughout.
• Safe transfers between systems
How to transfer safely between crane systems and pallet racking, including the sequencing required to maintain continuous fall protection during the transfer and the precautions required at transition points.
• Emergency procedures
Awareness of the emergency procedures applicable to warehouse access environments, including what to do in the event of a fall arrest activation, how to raise the alarm and what to expect from a rescue response.
• Assessment
Theory test and observed practical assessment evaluated by the course instructor.
Course combining classroom theory with practical exercises on the crane systems and racking structures present in the training environment. Delegates practise climbing, access methods and transfers under instructor supervision.
Personnel required to use fall arrest equipment to access warehouse racking and crane systems, including warehouse engineers, jam-busters, on-site rescue personnel and fire suppression system engineers.
Delegates must be physically capable of working at height and should have experience in warehouses or industrial environments.
