Manual Handling Awareness
More than a third of all workplace injuries reported to the HSE involve manual handling - making it one of the most significant and preventable causes of harm at work. Following HSE guidance INDG143 and INDG398, this course covers the risks of lifting, lowering, carrying, pushing and pulling loads, how to assess manual handling tasks, when handling can be avoided entirely and what the Manual Handling Operations Regulations (MHOR) require of employers and employees. Completed entirely online, it supports organisations in meeting their statutory manual handling training obligations.
• Employer and employee duties under MHOR
What the Manual Handling Operations Regulations require of both employers and employees, including the duty to avoid manual handling where reasonably practicable and the steps required when it cannot be avoided.
• Manual handling injuries and high-risk tasks
How manual handling injuries occur, the parts of the body most commonly affected, and the tasks and working conditions that increase the likelihood of harm.
• Avoiding manual handling
How to identify tasks that can be avoided, mechanised or automated, and how to reduce the frequency and risk of manual handling where elimination is not practicable.
• Assessing manual handling tasks
How to carry out a manual handling risk assessment, involve the right personnel in the process and maintain accurate records in line with regulatory requirements.
• Safe handling techniques
Practical techniques for lifting, lowering, carrying, pushing and pulling loads safely, including posture, load positioning and how to adapt technique to different task types.
