Novice Abseil Training
Abseiling on vertical structures with no intermediate anchor points demands a specific and well-practised set of skills. This course gives delegates the knowledge and practical skills to plan and carry out safe ascents and descents using rope-based access methods, covering equipment inspection, anchor selection, rope rigging, back-up devices, change-over manoeuvres, edge passing and snatch rescue. On successful completion, delegates receive a certificate of competency valid for three years.
• Legislation and regulations
The legal framework for working at height, including the Work at Height Regulations 2005 and the duties they place on employers and employees when planning and carrying out rope-based access operations.
• Risk assessment
How to identify and assess the hazards specific to abseil operations on vertical structures and apply appropriate control measures before work begins.
• Personal suspension equipment
How to inspect, use and care for personal suspension and abseil equipment correctly, including identifying defects that would take equipment out of service before use.
• Descending and ascending techniques
How to carry out controlled descents and ascents on vertical structures safely, including correct body position, rope management and speed control throughout the operation.
• Back-up devices
How to select and use back-up devices correctly during abseil operations, including their role in preventing uncontrolled descent in the event of primary device failure.
• Change-over manoeuvre
How to perform a change-over between descent and ascent modes safely while suspended on a vertical structure, including the sequencing required to maintain continuous protection throughout.
• Passing edges and deviations
How to pass a 90-degree edge safely and use a small deviation to redirect the rope around obstacles encountered during an abseil operation.
• Anchor point selection and rope rigging
How to identify and assess suitable anchor points for rope rigging on vertical structures, and how to use slings and wire strops correctly as part of the anchor system.
• Snatch rescue
How to carry out a basic snatch rescue of an incapacitated colleague suspended on a vertical structure, including approach, packaging and lowering procedures.
• Assessment
Theory test and observed practical assessments evaluated by the course instructor.
Course combining classroom theory with progressive practical exercises on vertical structures. Delegates develop ascending, descending and rescue techniques through instructor-supervised sessions, building towards a practical assessment on the final day.
Individuals required to use abseil techniques for construction or maintenance purposes, including telecoms climbers and structural inspectors. Delegates requiring more advanced rope access techniques should consider the IRATA training scheme.
Delegates must hold a valid working at height certificate that includes practical training. Delegates must be medically fit to work at height.
