RF and EMF Awareness
Anyone working on or near sites where electromagnetic fields (EMF) or radio frequency (RF) energy is produced needs to understand the risks before they are granted access and, in many cases, completing accredited training is a condition of site entry. This course, developed by EMF and RF experts and approved by IOSH, covers how EMF and RF are generated, the health effects of exposure, permissible exposure levels and the control measures required to protect workers. Completed entirely online, it meets the requirements of the EMF Directive 2013/35/EU, the Control of Electromagnetic Fields at Work Regulations 2016 and the MATS Group, and is accepted by Arqiva as part of the Gateway Process.
• What EMF and RF are
How electromagnetic fields and radio frequency energy are generated - both intentionally and unintentionally - in a range of working environments, from telecoms and broadcast systems to induction heating, semiconductor processing and medical diathermy.
• Health effects and exposure risks
The potential health effects of EMF and RF exposure, the difference between thermal and non-thermal effects, and the conditions under which workers may be accidentally exposed to harmful levels.
• Permissible exposure levels
The exposure limits set out by ICNIRP and the relevant legislation, how they are derived and what they mean in practice for workers and those responsible for managing site access.
• Legislation and responsibilities
What the Control of Electromagnetic Fields at Work Regulations 2016, the EMF Directive 2013/35/EU and associated guidance require of employers and operators, and the consequences of failing to manage EMF and RF risks effectively.
• Measurement and control
How EMF and RF are measured in the workplace, how hazard zones are established and the control measures - including exclusion zones, access controls and PPE - used to reduce exposure.
• Assessment
Online knowledge checks completed throughout the course.
Online e-learning course allowing completion at the learner's own pace across multiple sessions. Developed by EMF and RF specialists and approved by IOSH.
Anyone who works on, operates or visits sites where EMF or RF energy is produced, including telecoms engineers, broadcast workers and site managers. Required for workers seeking access to Arqiva and other operator sites as part of the site gateway process.
No prerequisites required.
