Apply structured risk assessment principles to identify workplace hazards, evaluate risk levels and implement appropriate control measures that reduce harm. What "suitable and sufficient" means in practice, how it is interpreted by the HSE and the courts, and what distinguishes an adequate risk assessment from one that falls short of the legal standard.
• Principles and methodology
The five-step risk assessment process, the principles that underpin it and the methodology required to apply it consistently and effectively across a range of workplace environments and activities.
• Perception of risk
How individual perception of risk influences the quality of a risk assessment, the cognitive biases that lead to hazards being overlooked or risks being underestimated, and how to mitigate them.
• Common pitfalls
The most frequent errors made when carrying out risk assessments - including generic assessments, overlooked hazards and inadequate controls - and how to identify and correct them.
• Practical application
Hands-on exercises applying risk assessment principles to realistic workplace scenarios, including completing a risk assessment document and reviewing the findings of an existing assessment.
• Assessment
Knowledge checks completed at the end of the course.
