Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) Training
Cover practical skills and underpinning knowledge to use self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) safely in hazardous atmospheres. You'll learn how to carry out pre- and post-use checks, don and operate SCBA correctly, understand your maintenance responsibilities and comply with relevant legislation including RIDDOR reporting requirements. This course leads to a certificate of competency valid for three years.
• Legislation and regulations
The legal framework governing the use of respiratory protective equipment in hazardous environments, including the Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations, COSHH and the requirements of HSG53.
• SCBA use and operating procedures
How to don, operate and doff self-contained breathing apparatus correctly, including cylinder checks, face seal verification and safe working practices under operational conditions.
• Pre- and post-use checks
The checks required before and after each use of SCBA, including cylinder pressure, valve operation, face piece condition and harness integrity, in line with manufacturer requirements.
• Maintenance requirements
The ongoing maintenance responsibilities of SCBA users, including how to identify defects, what to report and when equipment must be taken out of service and referred for inspection or service.
• RIDDOR
When and how to report incidents involving breathing apparatus under the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 2013, and what responsibilities fall to the individual user and the employer.
• Assessment
Observed practical exercises covering donning, operating and post-use procedures, evaluated by the course instructor.
Practical course covering SCBA operation, pre- and post-use checks, maintenance responsibilities and legislative compliance. Delegates practise donning, operating and doffing procedures under instructor supervision.
Operatives and site workers who are required to use self-contained breathing apparatus as part of their role in hazardous atmospheres, including those working in confined spaces, chemical environments or other areas where the atmosphere cannot be made safe by other means.
Delegates must have experience in working in hazardous environments and be physically capable of carrying out practical activities, including the use of SCBA equipment.
