Signal Climbing Training
Railway signal structures present access challenges specific to the rail environment - fixed and portable ladder systems, protected and unprotected access routes, and the additional hazards of working near live infrastructure. This course gives delegates the knowledge and practical skills to climb signal structures safely using both access methods. On successful completion, delegates receive a certificate of competency.
• Legislation and regulations
The legal framework for working at height on railway signal structures, including the Work at Height Regulations 2005 and any rail-specific requirements that apply to the access methods used.
• Risk assessment
How to identify and assess the hazards associated with climbing signal structures using both protected and unprotected access methods, and apply appropriate control measures before access begins.
• PPE inspection and fitting
How to carry out pre-use checks and correctly fit harnesses, helmets, fall arrest lanyards and positioning lanyards in line with manufacturer requirements before each access.
• Protected and unprotected access ways
The differences between protected and unprotected access methods on signal structures, how each is used safely and what additional precautions are required when climbing in unprotected areas.
• Climbing techniques
How to climb safely using harnesses, lanyards and work positioning lanyards on signal structures, including correct body position, equipment management and the precautions required when ascending, descending and changing position on the structure.
• Safe use of portable ladders
How to select, position and use portable ladders safely on signal structures, including pre-use checks and the conditions under which portable ladder access is appropriate.
• Retractable blocks
How to set up and use retractable fall arrest blocks correctly on signal structures, including pre-use inspection and the circumstances in which their use is required.
• Emergency procedures
Awareness of the emergency procedures applicable to signal structure access, including what to do in the event of a fall arrest activation, how to raise the alarm and what to expect from a rescue response.
• Assessment
Theory test and observed practical assessment evaluated by the course instructor.
Course combining classroom theory with practical climbing exercises on signal structures, covering both protected and unprotected access methods under instructor supervision.
Personnel required to climb and maintain railway signal structures using fixed and portable ladders.
Delegates should be physically capable of climbing and working at height.
