Spill Response Awareness Training
A spill that is not contained quickly can cause serious harm to people, damage property and contaminate drains and the wider environment, and the window for effective response is narrow. This course gives delegates the knowledge to recognise spill hazards, understand their legal responsibilities under COSHH and environmental legislation. On successful completion, delegates receive a certificate of competency.
• Legislation
The health, safety and environmental legislation relevant to spill management, including the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations 2002 and the environmental duties that apply when a spill creates a risk of contamination to drains, watercourses or land.
• Spill kits and response materials
The types of spill kit available, the absorbent and containment materials each contains, and how to identify the correct kit for the substance and situation - including the differences between chemical, oil and general-purpose kits.
• Source, pathway and receptor
How to identify and control the source of a spill, the pathway by which it could spread and the receptors - including people, drains and the environment - that must be protected during the response.
• Personal protective equipment
The PPE requirements for spill response, how to select the correct equipment for the hazard and how to don it correctly before approaching a spill.
• Local spill response procedures
How to identify and follow site-specific spill response procedures, including who to notify, where response equipment is located and how the response integrates with the site's wider emergency arrangements.
• Dynamic risk assessment
How to carry out a dynamic risk assessment during a spill incident, assess changing conditions in real time and adapt the response approach when the situation develops differently from what was anticipated.
• Assessment
Knowledge checks completed at the end of the course.
Classroom-based course combining theory with practical scenario exercises applying spill response procedures and dynamic risk assessment.
Managers, supervisors, spill response teams and personnel with health, safety or environmental responsibilities.
