Spill Response Training
Knowing the theory of spill response is one thing, being able to apply it quickly and correctly under pressure is another. This practical course develops delegates' ability to respond to spillages as a team, covering dynamic risk assessment, PPE selection, the correct use of spill response materials and equipment, damage limitation and post-spill clean-up. On successful completion, delegates receive a certificate of competency.
• Spill kit identification and location
How to identify the spill response kits available on site, where they are located and what each contains, ensuring delegates know exactly where to go and what to use before a spill occurs.
• Dynamic risk assessment
How to carry out a dynamic risk assessment at the point of a spill, assess the hazards present in real time and adapt the response as conditions develop.
• Team responsibilities and delegation
How to allocate and manage duties within a spill response team, including who takes control, how tasks are delegated and how the team communicates during an active response.
• PPE selection and use
How to select and correctly don the appropriate PPE for the substance and situation before approaching a spill, and the limitations of different PPE types in a spill response context.
• Application of spill response materials and equipment
How to apply absorbent and containment materials correctly, use spill response equipment effectively and work within the practical limitations of the kit available on site.
• Controlling and limiting spill damage
How to contain a spill at source, prevent it from spreading to drains, watercourses or adjacent areas, and limit the damage caused while the response is ongoing.
• Making hazardous materials safe
How to neutralise or render safe hazardous materials following containment, in line with the substance's properties and the site's emergency procedures.
• Post-spill clean-up
• The steps required to complete a spill response safely, including waste disposal, equipment decontamination, restoring the area to a safe condition and reporting the incident in line with site procedures.
• Assessment
Practical scenario exercises and course debrief evaluated by the course instructor.
Practical course combining scenario-based spill response exercises with classroom instruction. Can be tailored to site-specific hazards and substances.
Personnel responsible for responding to spillages in the workplace, including supervisors, operators and health and safety teams.
Delegates should provide Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs) and an overview of tasks involving hazardous materials at the time of booking. On-site practical training will use client equipment, which must be maintained in good working order.
