Water Jetting Drain and Sewer Training
High-pressure water jetting in drains and sewers is one of the most hazardous operations in the utilities and drainage sector and anyone involved in cleaning, managing or designing these tasks is required to have formal knowledge and understanding of the risks. This WJA-accredited course covers the legal framework, equipment checks, hazard identification, reaction forces, PPE and RPE, and the WJA Red Code of Practice for drain and sewer cleaning.
• Introduction to drains and sewers
The components of a drainage system, how drain and sewer cleaning operations are planned and managed, and the legal framework governing drainage work under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and drainage law.
• WJA Red Code of Practice
The WJA Red Code of Practice for drain and sewer water jetting, the best practice it contains and how it is used as a reference throughout the operation. Each delegate receives a personal copy.
• Equipment checks and defects
How to carry out pre-start checks on water jetting equipment, identify defects or faults before the operation begins and understand the safety devices that must be in place before jetting starts.
• Hoses
Hose certification requirements, how to inspect hoses correctly, how to manage hoses safely during operation and the hose whip checks required to prevent uncontrolled movement under pressure.
• Nozzles and reaction forces
The types of nozzle available for drain and sewer cleaning, how to select the correct nozzle for the task, and how reaction forces are generated during jetting and managed safely through correct manual handling technique.
• Typical injuries and prevention
The injuries caused by high-pressure water jet strikes and pressurised system failure, how they occur and the actions specified in the Red Code of Practice to prevent them and respond if they do occur.
• PPE and RPE
The personal protective equipment and respiratory protective equipment required for drain and sewer jetting operations, and how to select, inspect and use each item correctly.
• Competent teams and safe working
What constitutes a competent team for drain and sewer cleaning operations, the roles and responsibilities within the team and the procedures required to leave the work area safe and secure on completion.
• DSG only: Surface preparation using a jetting gun
How to carry out surface preparation safely using a jetting gun with a protective shroud up to 350 bar (5,000 psi), including hose whip checks, managing reaction forces and maintaining safe comfortable control of jetting accessories throughout.
• Assessment
Theory assessment in a classroom environment and practical assessment using live water jetting equipment, covering drain and sewer cleaning and, for DSG candidates, surface preparation.
Course combining facilitated classroom theory, including group discussion, question and answer sessions and review of industry accidents, with practical assessment using live water jetting equipment. DSG candidates complete additional practical training in surface preparation using a jetting gun with a protective shroud.
Operational candidates new to drain and sewer jetting, water jetting candidates renewing an expiring WJA card, and managers, supervisors, site owners, permit issuers and health and safety officers responsible for managing or designing drain cleaning tasks using water jetting equipment.
Delegates must have completed the WJA Safety Awareness course prior to attending. The Safety Awareness card is valid for three years. Delegates must be at least 16 years old and employed or in a structured training programme. Delegates must be at least 18 years old if unemployed or not in structured training. Delegates must be able to understand spoken and written English.
