
Working at Height Awareness
Understand the risks associated with working at height and the legal requirements that govern it, so you can identify hazards, follow safe systems of work and contribute to a safer working environment. You'll learn how to recognise situations that constitute working at height, identify common hazards and defects and apply HSE guidance to reduce the risk of falls. This course supports compliance with the Work at Height Regulations 2005 and is completed entirely online.
• What constitutes working at height
How working at height is defined under the Work at Height Regulations 2005, the range of situations it covers - from rooftops and scaffolds to ladders and elevated platforms - and why the risks are significant.
• Legal obligations
What the Work at Height Regulations 2005 require of employers and employees, including the hierarchy of control measures and the duty to avoid, prevent and mitigate the risk of falls.
• Hazard identification
How to identify common workplace hazards associated with working at height, including obvious defects in access equipment, unsafe edge conditions and environmental factors that increase risk.
• Safe systems of work
The safe working procedures and precautions that must be in place before and during work at height, including planning, supervision and the selection of appropriate equipment.
• Access equipment
Practical guidance on the safe use of ladders, stepladders, scaffolds and mobile elevating work platforms, including when each type of equipment is appropriate and what to check before use.
• Health and safety culture
How individual behaviour contributes to workplace safety, and how to promote safe working practices among colleagues and teams when working at height.
• HSE guidance
An overview of HSE guidance documents IND(G) 401 and IND(G) 402 and how they support safe decision-making when planning and carrying out work at height.
• Assessment
