Confined Space Awareness with Permit Writing Training
Develop a thorough understanding of the permit to work (PTW) process for confined space entry and the responsibilities that come with issuing and managing permits. You'll learn how to identify confined space hazards, carry out suitable risk assessments and apply the legal framework and safe system principles that underpin effective PTW control. This course does not lead to a formal qualification but provides the knowledge required to issue and manage permits to work for confined space entry.
• Legislation and regulations
The legal framework governing confined space work and permit to work requirements, including the Confined Spaces Regulations 1997, the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and the requirements of ACoP L101.
• Definition and classification
How a confined space is defined under the Regulations, how spaces are classified by risk level and how classification affects the PTW process and the controls required.
• Specified risks
The five specified risks set out in the Regulations, how they are identified during the risk assessment process and how their presence affects permit conditions and entry requirements.
• Duties under the Regulations
What the Regulations require of PTW issuers specifically, including the obligation to ensure entry is only authorised where a suitable and sufficient risk assessment has been completed and appropriate controls are in place.
• Roles and responsibilities
The responsibilities of PTW issuers, entry controllers, entrants and supervisors, and how each role contributes to maintaining control throughout the operation.
• Hazard identification and risk assessment
How to carry out a suitable and sufficient risk assessment for confined space entry, identify significant hazards and translate findings into permit conditions and control measures.
• Permit to work principles and application
The key elements of a confined space PTW, how to complete, issue, manage and cancel a permit correctly, and the common errors that compromise PTW integrity and put personnel at risk.
• Safe systems of work
How the PTW sits within the broader safe system of work, including the practical considerations for PTW issuers when conditions on site differ from those anticipated at the point of issue.
• Assessment
Theoretical assessment covering legislation, PTW principles and risk assessment application, evaluated by the course instructor.
Classroom-based course using theoretical instruction and practical scenario examples to develop delegates' understanding of the PTW process, legislative requirements and safe system responsibilities for confined space entry.
Personnel responsible for issuing and managing permits to work for confined space entry, including supervisors, safety officers and authorised persons who oversee access control and safe system compliance on site.
Delegates should have a basic understanding of PPE and safe systems of work and must be able to understand risk assessments and safety documentation.
