Asbestos Awareness
Cover the risks of asbestos exposure, recognise where asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) are likely to be found and know the correct procedures for managing and reporting suspected ACMs in the workplace. You'll learn how asbestos affects the body, what the law requires of duty holders and how to respond correctly if you encounter or suspect asbestos during your work. This course is approved by IOSH, CPD-certified and fully certified by the Independent Asbestos Training Providers (IATP), and is completed entirely online.
• What asbestos is
The origins and properties of asbestos, why it was widely used in construction and why it presents a significant health risk when disturbed or damaged.
• How asbestos affects the body
How asbestos fibres enter the body, where they accumulate and the mechanisms by which prolonged or repeated exposure leads to serious illness.
• Health effects and risk factors
The diseases caused by asbestos exposure - including mesothelioma, asbestosis and lung cancer - the risks associated with minor exposure, and how contributing factors such as smoking can increase overall risk.
• Where ACMs are found
The locations and types of asbestos-containing materials commonly present in buildings constructed before 2000, including how to recognise materials that may contain asbestos.
• What to do if you discover asbestos
The correct immediate response when asbestos is suspected or discovered, including stopping work, reporting procedures, the role of risk assessments and what sampling and clearance involves.
• Managing asbestos in the workplace
How duty holders are required to manage ACMs safely, including the use of management plans, action plans and warning systems to prevent exposure.
• Legal requirements
The responsibilities placed on duty holders under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012, how those responsibilities can be delegated and the consequences of non-compliance.

How to plan an asbestos assessment, the different types of survey available and how the findings feed into management and action plans.

Employees who work in buildings constructed before 2000, including those in construction, maintenance, refurbishment and demolition roles. Relevant job roles include alarm installers, carpenters, electricians, plumbers, shopfitters, telecoms engineers and general maintenance staff. Also suitable for directors, managers and supervisors responsible for controlling the work of others in these environments.
