First Response Emergency Care (FREC) Level 3 Training
Provide advanced prehospital care confidently and effectively in high-risk emergency situations. You'll learn to assess patients, manage medical and traumatic emergencies, deliver CPR and oxygen therapy, treat catastrophic bleeding and shock, and respond as a first responder in line with the Level D Pre-Hospital Emergency Medicine (PHEM) Skills Framework.
• Roles and responsibilities
The role of a first responder in a prehospital care context, legal and professional responsibilities, and the principles of incident reporting and documentation.
• Patient assessment
How to carry out a systematic assessment of a patient in an emergency, including primary and secondary surveys, identifying life-threatening conditions and prioritising treatment.
• Airway management
How to open, maintain and protect a patient's airway in adults, children and infants, including the use of airway adjuncts and positioning techniques appropriate to the patient's condition.
• CPR and AED use
How to deliver effective CPR and use an automated external defibrillator (AED) for adults, children and infants, including return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) procedures and post-resuscitation care.
• Emergency oxygen administration
How to administer emergency oxygen safely, including equipment assembly, flow rate selection and monitoring the patient's response during administration.
• Bleeding and shock management
How to recognise and manage external, internal and catastrophic bleeding, including the use of tourniquets and wound packing, and how to identify and treat shock resulting from blood loss or other causes.
• Trauma and injury management
How to assess and manage traumatic and minor injuries, including burns and scalds, helmet removal, and neck, spinal and pelvic immobilisation techniques.
• Medical emergencies
How to recognise and respond to a range of medical emergencies, including cardiac events, respiratory conditions, diabetic emergencies, seizures and anaphylaxis.
• Poisoning and environmental exposure
How to recognise and manage poisoning and intoxication, and the assessment and treatment of patients affected by environmental exposure including hypothermia and heat-related illness.
• Assessment
Practical and knowledge assessments completed throughout the course, in line with Qualsafe Level 3 Award requirements.
Classroom-based theory combined with hands-on practical exercises, scenario simulations and supervised patient assessment practice to replicate real-life emergencies.
First responders, law enforcement officers, firefighters, event medical cover personnel, and individuals working or volunteering in high-risk environments such as military, power stations, agriculture and manufacturing.
Delegates must be physically capable of performing CPR and casualty handling. Delegates should hold a current first aid qualification prior to attending, although this is not a formal requirement.
