St John Ambulance – First Aid at Work Requalification Training
First aid skills deteriorate without regular practice and a lapsed or poorly maintained qualification puts both the first aider and the people depending on them at risk. This St John Ambulance requalification course refreshes and updates the knowledge and practical skills required to continue meeting HSE First Aid at Work requirements, covering the full range of workplace injuries and medical emergencies. On successful completion, delegates receive a renewed St John Ambulance First Aid at Work certificate, valid for a further three years.
• Roles and responsibilities of a first aider
A review of what the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations require of designated workplace first aiders, including any updates to guidance or best practice since the previous qualification.
• Incident assessment and dynamic risk management
How to reassess incidents, conduct dynamic risk assessments and manage scenes safely — with emphasis on applying these skills confidently under the pressure of a real emergency.
• Managing an unresponsive casualty
A review of how to assess and manage a casualty who is unresponsive but breathing normally, including correct recovery position technique and monitoring until emergency services arrive.
• CPR and AED use
Refresher practice in recognising cardiac arrest, delivering effective CPR and using an automated external defibrillator (AED), including any updates to current resuscitation guidelines.
• Choking
A review of how to recognise and assist a choking casualty, including the interventions required for conscious and unconscious adults.
• Bleeding, wounds and shock
Refresher practice in managing bleeding and wounds, applying wound dressings correctly and providing first aid for shock while monitoring the casualty's condition.
• Serious injuries
A review of first aid for fractures, burns, scalds and other serious injuries, including recognising when injuries require emergency service intervention rather than first aid management alone.
• Medical emergencies
Refresher practice in recognising and responding to heart attacks, strokes, epileptic seizures and diabetes-related emergencies, and the appropriate first aid treatment for each.
• Minor workplace injuries
A review of the treatment of common minor injuries, including when a minor injury requires further medical attention.
• Assessment
Continuous practical assessment by the course instructor throughout the course, including observation of CPR, AED use, casualty management and response to emergency scenarios.
Classroom-based course combining interactive theory sessions with practical hands-on exercises. Delegates practise key first aid skills including CPR, AED use, casualty assessment and the management of injuries and medical emergencies — through demonstrations, group discussion and supervised practice.
Designated workplace first aiders who currently hold a valid First Aid at Work qualification and need to renew their certification to continue in their role.
Delegates must hold a valid St John Ambulance First Aid at Work certificate, or one expired within one month. Delegates must be physically capable of carrying out practical first aid tasks including CPR and casualty management on the floor.
