St John Ambulance – First Aid at Work Training
A fully qualified First Aid at Work certificate goes beyond emergency response - it means being equipped to manage the full range of injuries and medical emergencies that can occur in a workplace environment, from fractures, burns and severe bleeding to heart attacks, strokes and seizures. This three-day St John Ambulance course meets the requirements of the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations and is suitable for higher-risk environments or organisations requiring fully qualified first aiders. On successful completion, delegates receive a St John Ambulance First Aid at Work certificate, valid for three years.
• Roles and responsibilities of a first aider
What the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations require of designated workplace first aiders, the limits of the first aider role and the importance of acting within those limits while professional help is on its way.
• Incident assessment and risk management
How to conduct a thorough assessment of an emergency situation, identify and manage risks before approaching a casualty and control the scene to protect yourself and others while providing first aid.
• Managing an unresponsive casualty
How to assess and manage a casualty who is unresponsive but breathing normally, including the recovery position and ongoing monitoring until emergency services arrive.
• CPR and AED use
How to recognise when a casualty is not breathing normally and deliver effective CPR, and how to locate, prepare and use an automated external defibrillator (AED) safely.
• Choking
How to recognise a choking casualty and deliver appropriate interventions for a conscious and unconscious adult, including back blows and abdominal thrusts.
• Bleeding, wounds and shock
How to manage bleeding and wounds using direct pressure and wound dressing techniques, recognise severe blood loss requiring immediate escalation, and provide first aid for shock while monitoring the casualty's condition.
• Serious injuries
How to provide first aid for fractures, burns, scalds and other serious injuries, including recognising when injuries require emergency service intervention rather than first aid management alone.
• Medical emergencies
How to recognise and respond to medical conditions including heart attacks, strokes, epileptic seizures and diabetes-related emergencies, and what first aid treatment is appropriate for each.
• Minor workplace injuries
How to provide first aid for common minor injuries, including cuts, bruises and minor burns, and when a minor injury requires further medical attention.
• Assessment
Continuous practical assessment by the course instructor throughout the three days, including observation of CPR, AED use, casualty management and response to emergency scenarios.
Instructor-led course combining classroom sessions, practical hands-on training exercises, demonstrations and realistic first aid scenarios.
Designated workplace first aiders, employees responsible for managing workplace emergencies and staff working in medium to high-risk environments. Suitable for organisations required to provide full HSE-compliant first aid provision.
Delegates should be able to understand spoken and written English and be willing to participate in practical exercises. Delegates must be physically capable of carrying out practical first aid tasks including CPR.
