
Stress and Mental Wellbeing Management Training
Stress and poor mental health are among the leading causes of workplace absence in the UK and managers are often the first people to notice when something is wrong. This course gives managers and team leaders a thorough understanding of mental wellbeing, stress physiology, common mental health conditions and the practical tools to support employees effectively, including stress risk assessments and Wellness Action Plans. On successful completion, delegates receive a certificate of competency.
• Wellbeing and stress physiology
How stress affects the body and mind, the physiological signs and symptoms of stress, and the difference between adaptive and maladaptive coping mechanisms and their long-term impact on health and performance.
• Anxiety and depression
An overview of anxiety and depression — the two most common mental health conditions encountered in the workplace - including how they present, how they develop and what managers should and should not do when supporting an affected employee.
• Bio-Psycho-Social model of recovery
How the Bio-Psycho-Social model explains the interaction between biological, psychological and social factors in mental health recovery, and how this informs a more effective and holistic approach to supporting employees.
• Mindfulness-based stress reduction
An introduction to mindfulness-based stress reduction techniques, including a guided vagal breathing session, and how managers can signpost employees to these approaches as part of a broader wellbeing strategy.
• Whole business approach to mental wellbeing
How to embed mental health and wellbeing into organisational culture and practice, including the principles for promoting physical and mental wellness across teams and at a business-wide level.
• Stress risk assessments
How to conduct a stress risk assessment in the workplace, identify the key work-related stressors and implement appropriate controls in line with the HSE Management Standards for work-related stress.
• Wellness Action Plans
How to use Wellness Action Plans to support individual employees, including how to introduce them, what they should contain and how they support both the manager and the employee in maintaining open, constructive dialogue about wellbeing.
• Returning to work
How to manage the return to work of an employee who has been absent due to stress or mental ill health, using case studies to apply best practice principles to realistic workplace scenarios.
• Assessment
Knowledge checks and group reflection completed throughout the course.
