Client brief
Arco Professional Safety Services were invited by SGP Contracts to develop a comprehensive façade and louvre access strategy on their new ‘M by Montecalm Hotel’, in Shoreditch, London. The final solution involved both fall arrest and abseil access.
In addition to the original brief, we were asked to assist with the installation of the decorative louvres for the building exterior. The louvres would be craned into position and safely secured into final position by skilled Arco Professional Safety Services IRATA qualified tradesmen. The team were also required to carry out weather proofing to the curtain wall glazing.
Our solution
Following a detailed consultation and design phase, the use of Building Maintenance Units (BMUs) was ruled out due to the building’s complex geometry and the amount of space such equipment would require. Arco Professional Safety Services was subsequently engaged to work alongside the main architect and façade contractors to design and install a bespoke abseil and fall arrest system that complemented the hotel’s distinctive architecture while providing a safe, discreet, and cost-effective solution.
A series of unobtrusive EN795 rope access anchor points were installed on the structural steelwork, accessible via bespoke walkways leading to each of the five inclined elevations nestled within the decorative louvres. Access to these elevations is achieved through BridgeLatch fall arrest systems, selected for their ability to operate on inclines ranging from 0° to 70°.
For the installation of the louvres, Arco Professional Safety Services employed rope access techniques, which proved to be the safest and most cost-effective method given the roof’s height, steep angles, and limited access.
