CPCS A17C Telescopic Handler (Telehandler) Novice Training
The CPCS A17C Telescopic Handler (Novice) course provides delegates with the knowledge and practical skills required to safely operate a telescopic handler in accordance with current legislation and industry best practice. Designed for operators with little or no previous experience, the course develops an understanding of machine controls, operating techniques, lifting operations and workplace safety requirements. Successful completion helps delegates work towards achieving the CPCS Red Trained Operator Card.
• Introduction to the Telescopic Handler
An overview of telescopic handlers, their applications within construction and related industries, and the responsibilities of the operator.
• Health and Safety Legislation
Understanding the legal responsibilities of operators, employers and site personnel, along with the importance of following safe working practices.
• Machine Components and Controls
Learning the function of key machine components, controls, indicators and safety devices used on a telescopic handler.
• Pre-Use Inspections and Defect Reporting
Understanding how to carry out daily checks, identify defects and report issues in accordance with company procedures and manufacturer guidance.
• Operating the Telescopic Handler Safely
Learning how to manoeuvre the machine safely in a variety of site conditions while maintaining stability and control.
• Load Handling Principles
Understanding load weights, load centres, rated capacities and the factors that affect machine stability during lifting operations.
• Lift Planning and Safe Working Practices
Learning how to assess lifting tasks, identify hazards and apply appropriate control measures before commencing operations.
• Travelling with Loads
Understanding the precautions required when transporting loads across site, including visibility, ground conditions and pedestrian safety.
• Working Around Hazards
Recognising common workplace hazards such as overhead services, underground utilities, uneven ground and restricted working areas.
• Loading, Unloading and Placement of Materials
Developing practical skills in lifting, transporting and placing loads accurately and safely.
• Shutdown and Securing Procedures
Understanding the correct procedures for parking, shutting down and securing the machine at the end of operations.
• Theory and Practical Testing
Delegates complete the CPCS Theory Test and Practical Technical Test to demonstrate their knowledge and operating competence.

There are no formal prerequisites for this course. Delegates should have a good understanding of spoken and written English to successfully complete the theory and practical assessments.
