Davit User Training
Get the practical skills to plan and carry out a confined space rescue using a davit arm system, including the setup, operation and emergency procedures required to extract a casualty safely. You'll learn how to carry out pre-use inspection and assembly of the davit arm, winch and fall arrest block, establish exclusion zones, conduct dynamic risk assessments and respond effectively when a rescue scenario develops. This course leads to a certificate of competency valid for three years.
• Confined space hazards
The key dangers associated with confined space work relevant to rescue operations, including atmospheric hazards, restricted access and egress, and the risks introduced when a casualty requires extraction.
• Dynamic risk assessment
How to carry out a dynamic risk assessment at the point of rescue, adapt the planned approach to changing conditions and make safe decisions under time pressure without compromising the safety of the rescue team.
• Davit arm inspection and assembly
How to carry out a pre-use inspection of the davit arm system and assemble and disassemble it correctly in line with manufacturer requirements, including identifying defects that would take the system out of service.
• Winch and fall arrest block inspection and operation
How to inspect and operate the winch and fall arrest or recovery block, including load checks, brake function and correct rigging to support safe casualty extraction.
• Exclusion zones
How to establish and maintain an appropriate exclusion zone around the confined space during a rescue operation, controlling access and protecting both the rescue team and bystanders.
• Rescue scenario planning
How to discuss, plan and brief a rescue scenario before committing to entry, including role allocation, equipment checks and communication protocols.
• Emergency procedures
How to respond to complications during a rescue operation, including equipment failure, deteriorating atmospheric conditions and the need to adapt the extraction method mid-operation.
• Assessment
Observed practical exercises covering davit arm assembly, winch operation, exclusion zone management and scenario-based rescue, evaluated by the course instructor.
Practical course combining pre-use inspection, equipment assembly and scenario-based rescue exercises using a davit arm system. Delegates plan, brief and execute rescue scenarios under instructor supervision.
Operatives who hold a current confined space entry qualification and are required to carry out or support davit arm rescues as part of their role.
Delegates must hold a valid confined space entry qualification. Delegates must provide proof of certification prior to attendance.
