
Forklift Novice Reach
To provide individuals with little or no prior experience with the knowledge, skills, and understanding required to safely operate a reach truck, in accordance with current legislation and best practice, leading to initial certification and competence.
- Introduction to the reach truck and its components
Provides an overview of the reach forklift, its key parts, functions, and how it differs from other truck types. -
Roles and responsibilities of the operator and employer
Explains the legal duties and responsibilities required to maintain a safe working environment. -
Current health & safety legislation and guidance (e.g. HSE)
Introduces relevant UK legislation and industry best practice for safe forklift operation. -
Pre-use inspections and defect reporting
Teaches how to carry out thorough daily checks and correctly identify and report faults. -
Basic controls and safe operating techniques
Introduces reach truck controls and develops safe, smooth operating skills from beginner level. -
Manoeuvring in confined and narrow aisle environments
Develops the ability to operate safely in tight warehouse spaces and racking aisles. -
Load assessment, stability, and safe handling techniques
Explains how to assess loads and maintain stability, particularly at height and when reaching forward. -
Stacking and de-stacking at various heights
Teaches safe methods for placing and retrieving loads at different racking levels. -
Working at height and visibility awareness
Focuses on safe operation when handling loads at height, including maintaining clear visibility and control. -
Awareness of workplace hazards and pedestrian safety
Identifies common risks in warehouse environments and safe interaction with others. -
Battery charging procedures (electric trucks)
Covers correct and safe battery charging practices specific to reach forklifts. -
Practical skills assessment and theory test
Assesses both theoretical knowledge and practical ability to ensure operator competence.

This course is aimed at novice operators who have no previous experience operating a reach forklift.
It is suitable for those who:
- Are new to forklift operation
- Require full training from beginner level
- Need certification to operate a reach truck in the workplace
- Are starting a role involving warehouse or racking operations
- Want to develop skills in narrow aisle and high-level stacking environments
- No previous forklift experience required
- Good level of general health and mobility
- Basic understanding of workplace safety
- Sufficient level of English (or supported learning) to complete training and assessments safely
