IOSH Managing Safely Course
Managers and supervisors are responsible for the health and safety of the people they lead but many are given that responsibility without the knowledge or tools to carry it out effectively. This IOSH Managing Safely course gives managers and supervisors in any sector a practical grounding in risk assessment, hazard identification, incident investigation and safety performance monitoring, and explains what their legal and organisational responsibilities actually require of them. On successful completion, delegates receive the IOSH Managing Safely certificate.
• Introduction to managing safely
Why health and safety is a management responsibility, the consequences of poor safety performance for individuals and organisations, and the role managers and supervisors play in embedding a positive safety culture.
• Controlling risks and understanding responsibilities
The key concepts of hazard, risk, likelihood and consequence, how to apply the hierarchy of controls, how to carry out a risk assessment, and the legal and organisational responsibilities that sit at different levels of management.
• Understanding hazards
How to identify and categorise workplace hazards, assess the level of risk they present and implement control measures that are proportionate and effective.
• Investigating incidents
How workplace accidents and incidents occur, the process for carrying out an efficient investigation, and how root cause analysis identifies the underlying factors that need to be addressed to prevent recurrence.
• Measuring performance
The difference between active and reactive monitoring, how to identify meaningful safety performance indicators, and how to carry out audits, inspections and reviews to track and improve safety performance over time.
• Assessment
A practical risk assessment activity and a multiple-choice knowledge test. Includes group reflection and discussion on course content.
Classroom-based course combining theory with practical exercises, group discussion and a formal assessment.
