ITRA Rope Rescue Level 3 Training
Learn to supervise complex rope rescues, moving a litter-bound patient horizontally or diagonally in free-hanging space. You’ll build situational awareness and practise advanced techniques such as highlines, cross hauls and pick-off rescues. Pass the assessment to earn International Technical Rescue Association (ITRA) Level 3 certification, valid for three years.
• Building on the Level 2 syllabus
Consolidating the rope rescue skills developed at Level 2 and applying them to more complex rescue scenarios, systems and operational challenges.
• Applying advanced rope rescue physics
Understanding the forces generated within complex rope rescue systems, including load distribution, mechanical advantage and the effects of system configuration on equipment and anchors.
• Using skate blocks
Selecting, rigging and operating skate blocks within advanced rope rescue systems to facilitate controlled movement and changes in load direction.
• Building advanced anchors
Assessing anchor options and constructing suitable anchor systems for complex rescue scenarios, taking account of load distribution, system requirements and the forces applied.
• Understanding regulatory bodies and standards
Identifying the relevant regulatory bodies, industry guidance and standards associated with rope rescue, and understanding their application to safe rescue operations.
• Rigging advanced high directionals
Selecting, constructing and rigging advanced high-directional systems, including artificial high directionals, to manage rope paths, edge transitions and clearance requirements during rescue operations.
• Rigging highlines
Designing and rigging highline systems for the controlled movement of loads across gaps or obstacles, including English and Norwegian reeve systems and their practical applications in rescue scenarios.
• Moving a patient with cross hauls and guiding line offsets
Rigging and operating cross-haul and guiding-line offset systems to move a litter-bound patient horizontally or diagonally, while maintaining control of the load and its direction of travel.
• Rescuing a suspended victim
Planning and carrying out pick-off rescues involving a suspended casualty, including access, casualty transfer and controlled lowering or recovery using appropriate rope rescue techniques.
• Working on rope
Performing advanced rope manoeuvres, including transferring between rope systems, re-anchoring while ascending or descending, and accessing or breaking into a fixed rope system.
• Assessment
Demonstrating competence in the rope rescue techniques covered during the course through practical assessments of system rigging, equipment use and the application of appropriate rescue procedures.
Instructor-led rope rescue training, followed by a separate competence assessment.
