
Manual Handling Training
Manual handling injuries account for more than a third of all workplace injuries reported to the HSE and most of them are preventable with the right knowledge and technique. This course gives delegates a practical understanding of manual handling risks, the causes of back pain and musculoskeletal injury. On successful completion, delegates receive a certificate of competency.
• What is manual handling?
How manual handling is defined under the Manual Handling Operations Regulations, the range of activities it covers and why it remains one of the most significant causes of workplace injury.
• Accidents, injuries and consequences
The types of injuries caused by manual handling, including musculoskeletal disorders and acute injuries, and the consequences for the individual, the employer and the organisation when manual handling goes wrong.
• Causes of manual handling injuries and back pain
The factors that contribute to manual handling injuries - including load weight, posture, repetition and working environment - and how the structure and function of the spine makes it vulnerable to damage under load.
• Risk assessment
The four basic requirements for manual handling risk assessment, how to identify the factors that increase risk and what control measures can be put in place to reduce the likelihood of injury.
• The kinetic method of safe lifting
The correct technique for lifting loads safely using the kinetic method, including stance, grip, posture and load path, and how the same principles apply to carrying, pushing and pulling.
• Practical demonstration
Supervised practical exercises applying safe manual handling techniques to realistic workplace scenarios, allowing delegates to practise correct technique under instructor guidance.
• Assessment
Knowledge checks completed at the end of the course.
Classroom-based course combining theory with practical demonstration and supervised exercises.
Personnel required to undertake manual handling tasks in the workplace.
