MATS Tower Climber and Rescue Training
Climb towers, masts and pylons safely using protected and unprotected access systems. You will develop the practical skills and knowledge to work at height confidently, perform rescues using fall arrest equipment and manage colleagues in emergency situations on high-risk, exposed sites.

• Risk assessment awareness
How to identify hazards and apply risk assessment principles when working at height in exposed environments.
• PPE selection, fitting and pre-use checks
How to correctly select, fit and inspect personal protective equipment, including harnesses, helmets, fall arrest and work positioning lanyards.
• Access systems (protected and unprotected)
The differences between protected and unprotected access methods and how each is used in tower and mast climbing operations.
• Anchor point selection
How to identify and select suitable anchor points to ensure safe attachment during climbing and work positioning.
• Fall arrest and climbing systems
How to use fall arrest lanyards and fixed or temporary systems, including horizontal lifelines and retractable devices.
• Work positioning techniques
How to position yourself safely while working at height to maintain stability and reduce fall risk.
• Climbing techniques in exposed environments
Safe climbing methods for towers, masts and pylons in exposed conditions using approved systems and procedures.
• Use of knots in access systems
Appropriate use of knots in climbing and access systems where required.
• Emergency procedures and rescue planning
How to respond to emergencies, including planning and execution of rescue procedures in tower and mast environments.
• Rescue equipment awareness (No Shock kit)
Understanding the contents and use of No Shock rescue equipment for tower and mast rescue scenarios.
• Self-rescue techniques
How to carry out controlled self-rescue using approved methods and equipment.
• Casualty rescue procedures
How to perform conscious casualty lowering, abseil lift and lower rescue techniques and abseil cut rescue procedures.
• Casualty care and suspension syncope
How to provide immediate casualty care following a fall and understand the risks associated with suspension syncope.
• Assessment
Theory and practical assessments completed throughout the course to demonstrate competence in climbing and rescue techniques.
Classroom-based theory combined with practical, instructor-led climbing and rescue exercises in tower, mast and pylon environments. Training focuses on safe climbing techniques, use of fall protection systems and execution of emergency rescue procedures in exposed conditions.
Personnel required to climb towers, masts and pylons on MATS-operated sites for construction, maintenance or inspection activities, including telecoms climbers, structural inspectors and surveyors.
No prerequisites required.
