
Pallet Truck Novice Counterbalance
To provide individuals with little or no prior experience with the knowledge and practical skills required to safely operate a powered pallet truck (counterbalance type), in accordance with current legislation and best practice, leading to initial competence and certification.
- Introduction to the pallet truck and its components
Provides an overview of the powered pallet truck, including its key parts, functions, and typical workplace uses. -
Roles and responsibilities of the operator and employer
Explains the legal duties required to ensure safe operation and a compliant working environment. -
Current health & safety legislation and guidance (e.g. HSE)
Introduces relevant UK regulations and best practice for safe manual and mechanical handling of loads. -
Pre-use inspections and defect reporting
Teaches how to carry out daily safety checks and correctly identify and report faults. -
Basic controls and safe operating techniques
Introduces truck controls and develops safe, smooth handling techniques from beginner level. -
Manoeuvring in confined spaces
Develops the skills required to operate safely in tight areas such as loading bays, aisles, and workspaces. -
Load assessment and safe handling techniques
Teaches how to assess loads for stability and weight, ensuring safe movement and placement. -
Travelling with loads safely
Covers correct travel positions, speed control, and safe movement with and without loads. -
Working on gradients (where applicable)
Explains safe procedures for operating on slopes, including load positioning and braking techniques. -
Awareness of workplace hazards and pedestrian safety
Identifies common workplace risks and reinforces the importance of awareness around others. -
Battery charging procedures (electric models)
Covers safe charging practices and basic maintenance for powered pallet trucks. -
Practical skills assessment and theory test
Assesses theoretical knowledge and practical competence to confirm safe operating ability.

This course is aimed at novice operators who are new to using powered pallet trucks.
It is suitable for those who:
- Have no previous experience operating powered pallet trucks
- Require initial training for workplace use
- Are involved in loading, unloading, or internal goods movement
- Need certification to operate pallet truck equipment safely
- Are starting roles in warehouses, logistics, or distribution environments
- No previous experience required
- Good level of general health and mobility
- Basic understanding of workplace safety
- Sufficient level of English (or supported learning) to safely complete training and assessment
