Trainer Manual Handling Training
Training others in manual handling requires more than personal competency, it demands an understanding of adult learning principles, ergonomic assessment tools and instructional technique. This course gives delegates the knowledge and practical skills to design and deliver effective manual handling training in the workplace. On successful completion, delegates receive a certificate of competency.
• Legal and regulatory requirements
The legal framework governing manual handling operations, including the Manual Handling Operations Regulations and the duties they place on employers and those responsible for providing training.
• Anatomy, physiology and common injuries
The structure and function of the musculoskeletal system as it relates to manual handling, the common injuries caused by poor technique or excessive loading, and how this knowledge informs effective training delivery.
• Ergonomic principles
The ergonomic principles that underpin safe manual handling, including load characteristics, working posture, task design and the environmental factors that increase the risk of injury.
• Risk assessment of manual handling operations
How to carry out a manual handling risk assessment, identify significant risks and select appropriate control measures, including when specialist assessment tools are required.
• Assessment tools: MAC, RULA and REBA
An introduction to the Manual Handling Assessment Charts (MAC), Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA) and Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA), how each is used and when each tool is appropriate for assessing a given manual handling task.
• Training and learning techniques
The principles of adult learning and how they apply to manual handling training delivery, including how to structure a session, engage a mixed-ability group and assess whether learning has been transferred effectively.
• Train the Trainer: demonstration and practice
How to demonstrate safe manual handling techniques clearly and accurately to a group, give constructive feedback and adapt instructional style to meet the needs of different learners.
• Practical group activities and assessment
Group exercises assessing a range of manual handling tasks in practice, applying risk assessment and ergonomic knowledge in a realistic workplace context.
• Assessment
Knowledge review and practical assessment of instructional skills, evaluated by the course instructor.
Delivered through classroom learning, group exercises and practical training demonstrations.
Individuals required to train staff in safe manual handling techniques within their workplace.
