Working at Height Training

For many delegates, this is the first time they will use a harness in a real working context, and correct fitting, equipment checks and climbing technique are the foundations everything else depends on. This course familiarises delegates with the safe use of harnesses and associated fall protection equipment, covering legislation, pre-use checks, protected and unprotected access, basic climbing techniques and emergency procedure awareness. On successful completion, delegates receive a certificate of competency.

• Legislation and regulations
The legal framework for working at height, including the Work at Height Regulations 2005 and the duties they place on employers and employees when using harness-based fall protection equipment.

• Risk assessment
How to identify and assess the hazards associated with working at height using fall arrest equipment, and apply appropriate control measures before access begins.

• PPE inspection and fitting
How to carry out pre-use checks and correctly fit harnesses, helmets, fall arrest lanyards and positioning lanyards in line with manufacturer requirements before each use.

• Protected and unprotected access ways
The differences between protected and unprotected access routes, how each is used safely and what additional precautions apply when working in unprotected areas.

• Basic climbing techniques
How to climb safely using fall arrest lanyards and associated safety equipment, including correct body position, equipment management and the precautions required when ascending, descending and transferring between anchor points.

• Emergency procedure awareness
Awareness of the emergency procedures applicable to fall arrest environments, including what to do in the event of a fall arrest activation, how to raise the alarm and what to expect from a rescue response.

• Assessment
Theory test and observed practical assessment evaluated by the course instructor.

Course combining classroom theory with practical climbing exercises, covering both protected and unprotected access methods under instructor supervision.

Delegates required to use fall arrest equipment during their duties, including climbing to platforms or workplaces using fall arrest lanyards or setting up and operating fall arrest blocks.

Delegates must be physically capable of working at height and should have experience in PPE.
