The DBI-SALA Fixed Beam Anchor is an anchorage connector for a personal fall arrest system. It is designed to be attached to an I-beam. Capital Safety’s user manual warns about “Environmental Hazards” and that certain chemicals and corrosive environments may damage the equipment.

Capital Safety has become aware that the service life of the beam hooks identified in the images below (in red font) may be impaired by stress corrosion cracking when the anchor is exposed to salt-water or other chloride or sulfide-containing environments.
This is not a product recall. If you have these units deployed in salt-water or other chloride or sulfide-containing environments, and if you purchased the units prior to January 1, 2014, we recommend you:

1) have the units visually inspected by a competent person; and

2) if any corrosion, pitting or cracking is found on the beam hooks or the support tube (see illustrations below), remove the unit from service and return via your supplier/distributor to Capital Safety for evaluation and potential replacement under warranty at Capital Safety’s reasonable discretion and expense.

3) if no corrosion, pitting or cracking is found on the beam hooks or the support tube, the units are safe to remain in service provided they are inspected every 90 days and removed from service if any corrosion is found anywhere on the unit.

In extreme cases, the integrity of the beam hooks can be severely compromised to the point of failure by stress corrosion cracking as seen in the photographs below:

Illustrative images of extreme cases: pitting and corrosion and cracked beam hook

Since becoming aware of this issue, Capital Safety has changed the metal alloy of the beam hooks to make them resistant to stress corrosion cracking in salt-water or other chloride or sulfide-containing environments.
Capital Safety has also revised its User Manual concerning inspection as follows: “IMPORTANT: Any observed corrosion or rust on the anchor is a potential safety concern because it can weaken the product and create a risk of injury or death to workers. Any anchor showing signs of corrosion or rust should be removed from service immediately.”

Part numbers of potentially affected units are: # 2108406 (prev. # 08406), 2108407 (prev. #1009645), 2108408 (prev. # 009755), 2108409 (prev. # 010274) and 2108410 through 2108415.

If corroded fixed beam anchor units are removed from service, workers must use alternative fall protection anchors or systems pending installation of replacement beam anchors. Units removed from service should be returned via distribution to Capital Safety for potential replacement under warranty at Capital Safety’s reasonable discretion and expense, or users can call our Customer Service department directly at +33 497 10 00 10 to arrange to return their unit for potential replacement under warranty at

Capital Safety’s reasonable discretion and expense.

Capital Safety will post this Notice on its website at www.capitalsafety.com. Please direct any questions you may have to Tomas Magyarics, Quality Manager at +421 917 778 105.

On February 6th 2013 during ISPO Munich, UIAA Safety Commission organized a meeting with all manufactures of via ferrata sets. Based on this meeting all manufactures of via ferrata sets were asked to prepare their statement about the safety of rope friction  via ferrata sets which they have produced or are producing today.

UIAA Safety Commission recomends to all users of via ferrata sets to read following statement:

Following a comprehensive test programme conducted on used or aged rope friction based via ferrata sets, the climbing industry has found that some of these sets can fail in a fall situation.

The testing showed that the impact force in a fall may be increased and that the tensile strength of the lanyards may also be reduced in such a way that it could result in a full failure of the via ferrata set. Severe injury or death may be the consequence.

The level of the risk is dependent upon the specific model. Therefore each rope friction based via ferrata set owner should consult the information provided by the manufacturer of the set.

Please, have a look on SINGING ROCK VIA FERRATA STATEMENT to get the detailed information about your via ferrata set.

SINGING ROCK as a manufacturer of via ferrata sets, has made a lot of tests with different types of friction metal plates in combination with different types of ropes.

There are two types of metal plates on the market:

97771For type A the tests performed proved quite a big instability of the impact force measured at dynamic testing according to EN958.

Thus we have never used such solution at Singing Rock products.

97772

Type B give better stability of impact force results for brand new sets as well as the used or aged ones and we produced these sets till July 2009.

In 2009 we have found the solution of tearing webbing, which shows much more stability of the results of impact force through its lifetime and we stopped production of rope friction via ferrata sets completely.

Currently we are working on collection of worn and heavy used rope friction type sets from the market to make appropriate tests. Although all the tests done up to now prove the safe use of the sets, we are collecting more samples to get statistically significant results. Since Singing Rock does not produce this model for almost 4 years, we need more time to collect old sets from the market, which are still in use. If you have any questions regarding the rope friction via ferrata sets, please, contact us on an email: info@singingrock.cz or on the phone +420 481 585 007.

Precautionary Recall of EDELRID via ferrata sets with a rope brake

Comprehensive testing by the mountaineering sports industry on old, used via ferrata sets has shown that used via ferrata sets with rope brakes may fail in the event of a fall.

The tests showed that impact forces may be increased during a fall. When combined with used webbing arms with a reduced breaking strength the system may fail. This can lead to serious injury or death.

In order to prevent any risks to users, EDELRID has decided to recall all affected sets as a precautionary measure. Please stop using the affected products immediately. For details of the sets affected, see the attached list.

All private owners of a via ferrata set affected by the recall that is less than seven years old are requested to return it immediately either to directly to EDELRID or to a specialist retailer for forwarding to EDELRID. In return, you will receive a CABLE LITE 2.2 via ferrata set as a replacement. This set conforms to the latest requirements of the German Alpine Club (DAV) Safety Commission and the certification bodies. In addition, there is also the option to upgrade to a more expensive model from this new generation for a surcharge.

Via ferrata sets older than seven years have reached their maximum service life and must no longer be used. These older sets should be withdrawn from use – regardless of model and design type. EDELRID urgently requests that these older sets are destroyed. EDELRID assumes no responsibility for products that have exceeded their maximum service life.

EDELRID wants to ensure that these older sets are no longer in use. We are therefore offering owners of an older via ferrata set from 2005 or earlier the opportunity to trade in their old set for a new EDELRID via ferrata set at a special price.

For more information concerning the reshipment, the replacement or the special price offer for old sets (older than 2005) please consult our attached Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ).

Distributors and operators of rental pools are urgently requested to collect all via ferrata sets affected by the recall. They should be securely stored to ensure that they can no longer be used. We ask you to immediately return these via ferrata sets to us. For details of shipment processing, see the attached information. Details concerning reshipment are attached.

Retailers are requested to collect all new sets affected by the recall and send them separately to EDELRID. You will receive information regarding returned merchandise from consumers from our sales department or distribution agents.
