INCIDENT: WORKMAN CRITICAL AFTER FALL

“Fall into foundations” on major refurb project

It has been reported (14 February) by the Nottingham Post that a construction worker has been critically injured at Harvey Hadden Sports Centre in Bilborough after “falling into steel shutters”.

The incident happened at 8.30am on the site which is being redeveloped. The workman was taken to Queen’s Medical Centre, where he is being treated for his injuries.

Nottinghamshire Police and HSE are trying to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident. The centre is closed as it undergoes at huge £15 million revamp by contractors Carillion.

Firefighters called to the scene said the man had fallen into the foundations and had to be lifted out. He suffered severe head injuries and was unconscious.

Work on the project includes building an Olympic-sized swimming pool, a health suite, a 100-station fitness room, new changing facilities and a cafe.

A City Council spokesman said:

“We are aware that there has been an incident on the Harvey Hadden construction site this morning and that the Police and Health & Safety Executive have begun investigating.

Our thoughts are with the family of the man who sadly appears to have been seriously injured on site this morning.”
