Unsafe system of work led to fractured skull

At Derby Magistrates' Court United Milking Systems was fined £7,500 plus £3K in costs over an accident in July 2011 at Brookley Meadows Farm, Thurvaston, where a worker sustained a fractured skull during construction work. Steel beams weighing 80Kgs were being placed into wall brackets, with one worker on a ladder and another holding the beam above his head. One end of a beam had been placed in a bracket but then the man on the ladder lost his grip and the beam slipped. HSE investigation established that the accident was preventable if the company had used suitable equipment and it pleaded guilty to a breach of Section 2(1) of the Health & Safety at Work etc Act 1974
