Every year in the UK, 12,000 people are estimated to be dying from Occupational Lung Disease as a direct result of past exposures at work. It is also estimated a further 20000 people are self-reporting breathing or lung problems associated with work each year. Information from the HSE.

Respiratory Protection Equipment is widely selected as a protection measure after the hierarchy of controls have been followed and the hazard remaining. Unfortunately, up to 50% of respirators fail to offer the assumed protection level due to one of the following reasons.

It is therefore essential that an effective Respiratory Management Programme is implemented to help protect people at work.

There are 3 key elements to implementing an effective Respiratory Management Programme, these are:

  • Correct product selection and training in the use of Respiratory Protection Equipment (RPE)
  • Face Fit Testing by competent Fit2Fit approved specialists
  • Ongoing equipment maintenance of RPE and record keeping

Face Fit Testing

If you wear a tight-fitting respirator for protection against hazards at work, you will be required to have a face fit test to make sure the respirator fits correctly and therefore protects the wearer from the hazard.

The supporting guidance for COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health), CLaW (Control of Lead at Work), CAR (Control of Asbestos Regulations) and the Ionising Radiation Regulations, stipulate that fit testing should be carried out as part of the initial mask selection process.  This ensures that inadequately fitting face pieces are not selected for use. Further guidance can be found in the HSE document INDG479 and the accompanying guidance documents. These can be found here: [1] [2]

This should be done at initial selection of the Respiratory Protective Equipment or if facial configuration alters in any way such as:

  • Excessive weight gain or loss
  • Major Dentistry work
  • Changes to facial characteristics
  • We provide a Fit2Fit accredited service, carrying out face fit tests for clients throughout the UK, either at your premises or one of our training or satellite centres (Warrington, Enfield, Stafford, Hull)

Our large team of Fit2Fit Technicians can carry out Face Fit Testing throughout the UK and also deliver one of the few Fit2Fit approved training courses on Qualitative Face Fit Testing.

Inspection, Maintenance and Repair Services

Reusable Respiratory Protective Equipment should have recorded monthly inspections (or quarterly inspections if Respiratory Protective Equipment is used infrequently as stated in your risk assessment)

Many Reusable Respiratory Protective Equipment devices also require annual maintenance carried out as per manufacturers instructions. This maintenance by a competent person is necessary to ensure the equipment is efficiently performing to the required standards.

Our expert Technicians provide a wide range of COSHH RPE inspection, maintenance and repair services, including, quarterly and annual recorded inspections depending on our customers competencies and requirements.

These can be carried out onsite or at one of our dedicated workshops in Enfield, Hull or Warrington

Our Technicians can also carry out monthly or quarterly BS EN12021 breathing Quality air checks from your compressed air to Airline Respiratory equipment.

RPE Training

It is required that your wearers understand and use respiratory protective equipment correctly. Our individually-structured training courses ensure that your staff have all the knowledge they need to work safely in even the most hazardous of conditions.

All of our respiratory training courses are certificated and include a written and practical assessment. The courses cover all areas stipulated in HSG53.
